Ask Mary: What is this 2-handled rectangular pan?

Jo H. of Hayward, Wisconsin wrote to me via the contact form. She said:

I have a 9 by 17-1/2 cast iron pan. I can not see any writing on it at all. I got it from my grandfather years ago.
Can you tell me what it is used for and what it is worth?
Thank you so much for your time.

She sent along these two photos:

Jo, I do not provide opinions as to the “value” or worth of a piece. Value is entirely subjective. You can do a search of sold listings on eBay or a google images search to try to learn more about the pan. The sold listings search could give you some information on what similar pieces have sold for in the past 90 days.

I did do a google images search for your pan. I typed in “antique two handle cast iron rectangle pan.” Sure enough, one came up that is different from yours but similar in appearance. The owner of the pan called it a “wabi two-handled cast iron pan.” You might want to follow up from there and do some additional digging and see what you come up with!

I also reached out to Larry O’Neil of Tacoma Washington with photos of your pan. He told me that he believed that your piece was used as a baking or loaf pan.

I do not know the maker of your pan. Without any markings at all, I don’t think you will likely be able to find the answer to that part of your question.

Readers, do any of you have any additional information on this pan for Jo? If so, please send me an email via the contact form and let me know. If I get further information I will update this post.

Thanks for your question, Jo. Good luck with your continued research on the pan!
